AEO Strategy Case Study 1:
Winning AI Citations
This case study demonstrates that for content-rich organizations, AEO is a Product Governance exercise. By strategically defining content models (H-tags, entities) and leveraging technical SEO (Core Web Vitals, structure) to signal authority, Barrett Media ensured its content was the most structurally eligible source for AI extraction, successfully driving visibility and measurable authority signals visible in GSC.
From Prompt to Citation: How Structured Content Wins Referral Traffic from Answer Engines
Client:
Barrett Media
Industry:
News/Media Industry Analysis & Insights. Barrett Media covers specialized, high-E-E-A-T-sensitive topics (media business, layoffs, executive shifts) that are heavily sought by Answer Engines (like Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and others) for summaries.
Goal:
Establish Barrett Media as the definitive, citable source of truth for this breaking news, leveraging AEO strategy to gain high-visibility citation positions and drive high-quality traffic back to the site.
AEO Strategy and Implementation:
The strategy focused on maximizing the Citability Score by implementing technical and structural changes that signal authority and clarity to LLMs.
Target Content: Breaking News Post on CBS/Paramount Layoffs (Published 10/29)
Strategy Components:
The core of my AEO strategy was to maximize the article’s Citability Score by implementing structural and content modeling decisions that directly influence how Large Language Models (LLMs) process information. My approach focused on four critical areas of governance:
- Topical Authority (E-E-A-T): I ensured the article was published by "BNM Staff" on Barrett Media, an established industry entity. LLMs prefer to cite known, specialized entities, and this setup immediately signaled high authority and relevance in the media vertical.
- Prompt Alignment: I deliberately structured the article title as a direct answer to the query: "Dana Jacobson, Michelle Miller, Streaming Shows Cut From CBS News Amid Paramount Skydance Layoffs." This structural alignment ensured the H1 tag corresponded perfectly with the conversational prompt, making it the most efficient source for an LLM to extract the primary fact.
- Data Structuring & Conciseness: I architected the content so the opening paragraph immediately delivered the key facts (e.g., "Layoffs have begun at Paramount Skydance, with more than 100 CBS News employees seeing their positions eliminated..."). Knowing that LLMs and AI Overviews seek the most concise, direct answer in the top 100 words, this maximized the chance of extraction and citation.
- Entity Richness (GEO Signal): I integrated a high density of named entities critical to the story: Dana Jacobson, Michelle Miller, CBS News, Paramount Skydance, David Ellison, Johannesburg bureau, $8.4 billion deal. The richness of correctly named entities validated the article as comprehensive and factual, allowing LLMs to confidently use entity recognition to build accurate summaries.
Results (GSC validation):
The success of the AEO strategy is validated by the real-world GSC data captured during the critical news cycle (October 29 – November 5), demonstrating the content's immediate and dominant authority.
The article secured massive visibility, converting pre-click authority into high-value traffic:
- Total Impressions: The content generated 50,800 total impressions in Google Search results. This proves the content successfully signaled authority and earned top-tier visibility, indicating high potential for AI citation and placement in news/answer carousels.
- Total Clicks: This visibility successfully converted into 1,780 total clicks back to the article.
- Average CTR: The 3.5% average CTR confirms healthy performance and strong relevance across high-ranking and snippet positions.
Beyond these core numbers, the AEO work resulted in a significant spike in branded query impressions (e.g., "Barrett Media") immediately following the news break. This indicates the content gained authoritative visibility—often driven by AI summaries citing the source—prompting users to seek the brand to read the full report.
Case Study 2:
Knowledge-based content modeling
By establishing a robust evergreen strategy and focusing on knowledge-base content modeling and sustained E-E-A-T, I transformed the client's content landscape. This approach successfully generated assets that continue to drive significant traffic and authority years after the initial publish date, providing the stable foundation necessary for long-term digital growth.
Evergreen Content Powerhouse: Sustaining Authority and Traffic Since 2022
Client:
AUDACY, INC (formerly Entercom)
Industry:
American broadcasting company, the second largest radio company in the United States, owning over 365 radio stations across 47 media markets.
Goal:
AUDACY, INC. managed a vast digital portfolio of over 365 stations. The core content challenge was reliance on volatile, timely news, which resulted in unpredictable traffic and inconsistent authority signals.
My primary goal was to transition the strategy to a sustainable, high-ROI content foundation by establishing an evergreen content powerhouse that would:
- Drive consistent, long-term organic traffic growth.
- Attract high-quality, authoritative backlinks.
- Solidify the domain's E-E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust) score.
Solution:
My solution was a strategic shift toward knowledge-based content modeling, ensuring assets were structurally designed for sustained relevance and authority, yielding returns for years. My approach focused on four governance and implementation pillars:
- Long-Term Topic Selection and Curation: I utilized advanced keyword and trend analysis to identify topics with perpetual relevance and high search volume (e.g., "Richest NBA Players"). I then established a formal, repeatable content refreshment schedule to ensure content, even assets published in 2022, remained accurate and perpetually fresh.
- Content and E-E-A-T Governance: I developed and enforced governance rules for authorship, requiring content to feature detailed author expertise, reputable sourcing, and clear authority signals.
- Structured Content Optimization: I mandated creating high-quality, well-structured content that provided maximum informational value. This included optimization for Google's ability to extract rich results and capture Featured Snippets.
- Prompt Alignment and Conciseness: I architected the content to be highly extractable by LLMs and Answer Engines (AEO). This involved ensuring core facts were delivered immediately in the opening paragraphs, and H1 tags were optimized for direct, conversational answers.
Results:
The evergreen strategy resulted in the creation of 200 high-performing content pieces that now serve as the stable traffic foundation for the business, directly proving the long-term ROI of the content investment.
- Organic Traffic Scale: The evergreen content cohort collectively generates approximately 1.7 Million Monthly Pageviews (PVs). This established a reliable, scalable foundation for traffic independent of volatile news cycles.
- Backlink Acquisition: The strategy consistently attracted high-quality, authoritative backlinks from external sources, significantly elevating the overall Domain Authority.
Deep Dive: "11 Richest NBA Players" (The 2022 Asset):
The success is validated by the sustained performance of assets like the article on "11 Richest NBA Players," which I managed from creation in March 2022. This content piece continues to maintain strong search visibility and drive traffic today:
Keyword Dominance: It ranks for over 1,000 high-volume keywords on Google SERP.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): It consistently became a prominent source for Google Featured Snippets on related NBA topics, demonstrating success in capturing answer-engine visibility.
By focusing on content modeling and sustained E-E-A-T, I transformed the client's content landscape, providing a foundational approach for long-term digital growth and authority.
